bio

I am an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University studying human-computer interaction, visualization, and social computing. I am affiliated with the HCI group.

I completed my Ph.D. at Berkeley in the Visualization Lab. Over the years, I've worked at (Xerox) PARC, Microsoft Research, IBM Research, and Tableau Software.

I also created the prefuse and flare visualization toolkits.

Our research investigating the graphical perception of time-series visualizations has been awarded a Best Paper Award at ACM CHI 2009.
I recently presented A Brief History of Data Visualization at the Stanford HCI Seminar. The video is on the internets.
